The child's body language and overall mood changed in a positive way when Ashley was his nurse during his time in the ER that day.
Ashley is a new nurse with us, recently a nurse tech. She has grown and continues to grow in her career. Recently, I was her charge nurse for the day. We had been steady throughout the shift. We received a phone call from a concerned guardian of a child, who the guardian described as irate to the nursing staff that day and informed us all they would be bringing said child to be evaluated. We all were trying to process and wonder what the guardian meant by "irate". Fast forward to when the said child (5 years old) became a patient of ours in the ER. Ashley was kind, patient, and caring with the guardian and the patient. We could all see how worried and tired the guardian was due to not knowing how else to help the child. Not only did Ashley help comfort and explain each procedure (blood draw/nose swab/medication administration) to the patient, but she also took the time to grab a chair, place it beside the patient's guardian, and explain everything in detail. Answering each question the guardian had. At one point, we noticed that the child had a problem with "trying to escape" the room the patient and guardian were in. The patient had taken up with Ashley and would respond better to her at this point in time than anyone else in the ER. Ashley felt the need to grab an extra chair and sit in the room with the patient and guardian. Ashley offered care and engagement with the patient. The child's body language and overall mood changed in a positive way when Ashley was his nurse during his time in the ER that day. Before being discharged, the patient had fallen asleep. Ashley offered to carry the child to the car for the guardian. The look of "thank you so much for the care you provided" screamed from the guardian's face to Ashley. We at Tanner East Alabama are so lucky and thankful to have Ashley as one of our team members. In the few months of becoming a nurse she has truly shown how extraordinary she is!
