September 2026 Honoree
Ashley Perry, BSN, RN
Ashley was my nurse on the neuro intermediate care floor for multiple days across my two stays. The first stay was after my initial craniotomy to remove a large meningioma. Under Ashley's care, I felt extremely comfortable and looked after.
I had surgery, and she was my nurse a few days later on the day we were planning on taking my first shower post-surgery. The day was too busy, and we were unable to get it done. Then the following morning, she came in at 7:00 am and told me that while she was not assigned to me, she was a floater and asked if I ever got my shower, which I hadn't. She then said, "Okay, let's do it."
She was not my assigned nurse, yet remembered I hadn't showered the day before and took the time that morning to help me shower for the first time since surgery. The complications post craniotomy affected my right-side mobility, and I was concerned with washing my incision for the first time, so she sat with me in the shower to make sure I was washing it appropriately and to make sure I didn't fall. She even helped provide advice on how to remove a sticky solution left from the EEGs all entwined in my hair.
I recently ended up back on the neuro floor post-surgical complication, and an infection was washed out.. While it was not ideal to be back in the hospital, I was instantly relieved that Ashley was my nurse.
During this stay, part of my skull was removed, so I was unable to get out of bed until I received my helmet. This took time (due to EEG's), but Ashley helped ensure that my time bedridden was comfortable. And when I received my helmet and got out of bed for the first time, she was so encouraging, especially when I was walking with PT in the hallways.
Again, she helped set me up with my first shower, and encouraged me that when I went home to get out of the house when I was feeling up for it and to not let my helmet hold me back. She shared personal experiences from her life to relate to me, and it was exactly what I needed.
Ashley went above and beyond for me, and I am so thankful to have been in her care.
