Ashley Owen, BSN, RN
Ashley demonstrated exceptional patient education and care coordination during a family member’s discharge from the sixth floor.
When it came time for discharge, she sat with us and went through every single medication – not rushed, not rattled off. She made sure we knew what each medication was for, how to take it, and what to watch for. She didn’t leave the room until she was confident, and we felt genuinely comfortable, not just nodding along to move things forward.
She coordinated with case management, tracked down physicians, and pulled together the entire multidisciplinary team to make sure everyone was aligned and moving in the same direction. That kind of coordination’s invisible to most, but it’s the difference between a discharge that drags on for hours in uncertainty and one that happens smoothly and on time. She made it happen for us.
Her attentiveness continued beyond discharge; she called the following day to check in prior to our first dialysis session. Dialysis is such a huge change for the whole family, and she really understood how to make us feel like we, even as caretakers, weren’t alone in the process. Her phone call meant more than she realizes.
Nurses like Ashley are the reason patients leave the hospital feeling prepared instead of abandoned. She turned a stressful, overwhelming process into one where we felt informed, cared for, and supported. She is exactly who the DAISY Award was created for.
