Near the end of my shift, Ashley noticed an associate who came to the unit to pick up a patient looked visibly upset and tearful. Ashley asked her if she was okay and needed anything, and the young lady said something to the effect that no, things weren’t ok, but she would still take care of the patient transport. Ashley intervened and said no, that she could wait, and told the associate to take a minute to pause and take a breath.

In response to Ashley’s kindness, the young lady said nothing was going right in her life. Ashley immediately responded by contacting the associate’s supervisor and the nursing supervisor to get this associate some help. The associate was then taken to be evaluated in a safe environment.

This story exemplifies what a caring, observant, and kind person Ashley is. It didn’t matter that it was the end of a long 12-hour shift. It didn’t matter that this was a stranger. Ashley saw someone in pain and reached out. She stopped, she listened, and she took action. This demonstrates the compassion Ashley shows not only for her patients, but for all of those around her as well. Had Ashley not intervened, we can only imagine how tragically this could have gone for this individual. Ashley has always gone above and beyond, and in this case, doing so has made a lifesaving difference to a person in desperate need of help.
