This was, at its core, a profoundly human act, demonstrating the utmost kindness and compassion for the patient and their family.
We had a patient in SICU who unexpectedly took a turn for the worse. The team did not feel his chances of survival were very high, so they contacted his wife so she could be at his bedside. The problem was, he had been brought in by ambulance following a wreck in the family’s only car, leaving his wife no way of getting to Wesley from Burrton, KS.

A group of us were planning on paying for an Uber so she would be able to see her husband before he passed away, but Uber would not travel the distance to Burrton to pick her up. Ashley, who had been his nurse for several days, immediately called her significant other and had him go pick up our patient’s wife in Burrton. If Ashley had not been his nurse, his wife would have missed the opportunity to be with her husband as he passed. I believe that this was above and beyond what any nurse and her family would have done, and it needs to be recognized.  This was, at its core, a profoundly human act, demonstrating the utmost kindness and compassion for the patient and their family.
