It is with immense pride and gratitude that we nominate Arlien Recinos for the DAISY Nurse Leader Award. For more than 24 years, Arlien has exemplified what it means to be an exceptional nurse leader, mentor, patient advocate, and role model. Since joining Downey in March 2002, she has dedicated herself to serving patients, supporting colleagues, and strengthening the culture of our L&D department. By her second year, her leadership abilities were already evident, and she stepped into the role of Relief Charge Nurse. The rest, as they say, is history.

The role of a Charge Nurse requires strong clinical expertise, clear communication, emotional intelligence, sound judgment, and the ability to lead effectively under pressure. Arlien possesses all of these qualities and so much more. She serves as the frontline leader connecting nurses, physicians, ancillary departments, and leadership while always keeping the needs of patients and staff at the center of every decision.

What truly distinguishes Arlien is her unwavering commitment to putting others before herself. She is a fierce advocate for both her patients and her staff. She consistently ensures her team has the support they need, often making sure that every member of the staff has received their breaks before she even considers taking her own. Her selflessness is not an occasional act. It is simply who she is.

Arlien has earned the respect of everyone she works with through her ability to collaborate seamlessly with L&D nurses, NICU nurses, physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary teams. She builds strong relationships based on trust, respect, and teamwork. No matter how challenging the situation, she approaches it with professionalism, grace, and a solutions-oriented mindset.

When others feel overwhelmed, Arlien remains calm, reassuring, and focused. She is known for saying, “We will figure it out and cross the bridge when we get there.” Her positivity and confidence help guide the team through even the most difficult shifts.

While Arlien is an outstanding clinician and leader, it is her extraordinary kindness and compassion that make her truly unforgettable. She has a unique gift for making people feel valued and appreciated. She somehow remembers every coworker's birthday and never misses an opportunity to celebrate them. Whether it is bringing flowers, a cake, or a thoughtful gesture, she ensures each person feels special and recognized.

Recognition is one of Arlien's greatest leadership strengths. She regularly acknowledges staff during huddles, highlighting their hard work, dedication, and achievements. What makes her recognition even more remarkable is that it extends beyond L&D. Arlien celebrates anyone who contributes to the success of our hospital, including staff from Engineering, Environmental Services, physicians, ancillary departments, and leadership. She understands that every role matters and that appreciation has the power to inspire excellence.

Her thoughtful acts of kindness have become part of the culture of our unit. Staff knows that if Arlien is working, there is a good chance she has brought treats for the team to enjoy during their breaks or has planned a special way to recognize someone's accomplishments. These gestures may seem small, but they have had a tremendous impact on morale, engagement, and team cohesion. Her kindness creates an environment where people feel seen, respected, and appreciated.

Arlien is also known as the unit's “jack-of-all-trades.” Whether it is troubleshooting a computer, fixing a bed, addressing a maintenance issue, or solving an unexpected challenge, she is often the first person people call. She is resourceful, dependable, and determined to find solutions. Give Arlien a task, and everyone can be confident it will be completed thoroughly, accurately, and on time.

Despite her many responsibilities, Arlien remains remarkably calm and composed under pressure. She leads by example every day, arriving prepared, on time, and ready to support her patients and colleagues. Her dependability is truly extraordinary. In fact, since being hired in March 2002, Arlien has never missed a scheduled day of work. This exceptional attendance record reflects her unwavering commitment to her profession, her patients, and her team.

Her contributions extend well beyond her daily responsibilities. Arlien is an active member of the Perinatal Patient Safety Committee, where she helps advance initiatives that improve patient safety and outcomes for mothers and newborns. She has also shared her knowledge and expertise by serving as a speaker at the OB Summit Conference, educating and inspiring L&D nurses and OB providers throughout the organization. Outside of work, she remains deeply committed to serving others through her church and community volunteer activities.

Included with this nomination are photographs that capture what words alone cannot fully describe. These pictures showcase just a few of the many occasions when Arlien recognized team members with flowers and thoughtful gestures of appreciation. Whether celebrating milestones, birthdays, achievements, or simply acknowledging someone's hard work, Arlien consistently goes out of her way to make others feel valued.

The smiles captured in these photographs reflect the genuine joy and positivity she brings to our workplace. They represent countless moments in which her kindness brightened someone's day and reinforced a culture of gratitude, belonging, and respect.

Arlien's favorite quote is, “If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.” Anyone who has worked alongside her knows that she embodies this philosophy every day. Her passion for nursing, dedication to her team, and genuine love for people are evident in every interaction.

Ask anyone in L&D about Arlien Recinos, and they will not simply tell you she is an excellent Charge Nurse. They will share stories about her compassion, generosity, leadership, humor, encouragement, and the countless ways she has made difficult days easier and joyful moments even more meaningful. They will tell you about the flowers she brought, the celebrations she organized, the problems she solved, and the unwavering support she provided when it was needed most.

Arlien is more than an exceptional nurse leader. She is the heart of our L&D team. Through her compassion, positivity, servant leadership, and unwavering dedication to others, she has left an indelible mark on the lives of patients, families, physicians, and colleagues.

She is profoundly deserving of the DAISY Nurse Leader Award and recognition for her extraordinary legacy of service, leadership, and love for nursing.

Thank you, Arlien, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
