The patient was very appreciative to have this tool available and to have such care from Ariana.
Ariana created a communication tool for a deaf patient, which the unit can continue to use as needed. We are all familiar with the whiteboard option for writing out information and asking questions for patients who are deaf. That is time-consuming, and handwriting can be difficult to interpret. Ariana created at least 19 cards to assist in communicating. Some of the cards are directed to the patient: “Are you having any pain?” “I am bringing you (blank medication) for (blank explanation).” “Do you need anything else before I go?” Others are from the patient: “I need pain medication.”
By placing the cards in an acrylic 8.5 x 11 sign display, which is easy to exchange, both patient and nurse can write answers and give information. The patient is able to circle their pain score and options for describing pain. This patient was with us for several days, and this system helped the patient have a much better stay. While not feeling good, this provided a way to get over some of the mundane hurdles and focus on healing. The patient was very appreciative to have this tool available and to have such care from Ariana.
