Aracely Sosa, RN, BSN
Our family would like to recognize Aracely Sosa for the extraordinary compassion and care she showed during one of the most difficult moments we have experienced. My husband was admitted to PIH Health Whittier. Our family was overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty. It was late at night during the graveyard shift, and we were exhausted, worried, and emotionally drained. Then Aracely walked into the room and immediately changed the atmosphere.
From the moment Aracely introduced herself, she brought a sense of calm and reassurance that we desperately needed. Her kindness was genuine, her demeanor was warm, and her smile never left her face even through the long hours of her overnight shift. She treated my husband with such dignity, patience, and attentiveness, making sure he was comfortable and cared for at every moment. Even though she was incredibly busy throughout the night, she never failed to come back and provide updates in a timely manner. In fact, many times she answered questions and gave updates before I even had the chance to ask.
My husband was receiving three different types of antibiotics through IV, and Aracely was always there right on time to change them out before the machine even alerted us that they were empty. Her attentiveness and awareness gave us so much confidence that my husband was being closely cared for. My husband underwent surgery at 6:15 p.m. and returned to his room for recovery at around 7:45 p.m. About three hours later, something happened that I will never forget. While I was holding him, my husband suddenly fainted in my arms. It was one of the scariest moments of my life. For a moment, it felt as if I was holding my husband in the afterlife.
Aracely immediately sprang into action and called the rapid response team. What amazed me most was how calm, composed, and focused she remained during such a frightening moment. When the rapid response team arrived and began asking questions, Aracely provided every detail flawlessly and confidently. Because of her quick thinking and clear communication, it was discovered that my husband’s potassium levels were low, which had caused his heart rate to drop dangerously low. Watching her handle such a critical moment with such professionalism and grace was remarkable. While I was terrified, Aracely held everything together seamlessly. Her calm presence helped me feel brave during a moment when I felt completely helpless.
Aracely went far beyond what we expected from a nurse. Her charisma, empathy, attentiveness, positiveness, and dedication reminded us that nursing is not just about providing medical care; it is about humanity, connection, and bringing comfort to people during their most vulnerable moments. Because of Aracely, our family felt supported, heard, and cared for during a time when we needed it most. We will always remember the difference she made for us, and we are incredibly grateful for the compassion she showed throughout that night and his stay at PIH Whittier.
PIH Health truly has one remarkable nurse as part of their team. Patients and families are incredibly lucky to have someone like Aracely caring for them and their loved ones. We have never previously experienced such care like this before at any hospital facility, we got discharged and we left amazed of the service we received. She truly embodies the very best of what nursing should be, and we believe she deserves to be recognized for the meaningful difference she made in our care.
