September 2026 Honoree
April Pettit, MSN, RN
April Pettit’s actions have a profound impact on both patient outcomes and team functioning. Her ability to demonstrate compassionate communication and clinical leadership directly influences the quality of care we deliver, especially during high‑stress situations.
One of the clearest examples occurred during the night we received four admissions at once. The unit was under intense pressure, and the potential for delays, miscommunication, or patient dissatisfaction was extremely high. April’s decision to stay present and work side‑by‑side with me ensured that none of our patients felt the strain of the workload. Her leadership stabilized the environment and allowed us to maintain safe, organized care despite the chaos. Her impact was even more evident with the patient who arrived extremely upset about her ER experience.
This patient was on the verge of escalating into a full confrontation — she was swearing, visibly distressed, and expressing deep frustration about the lack of answers. April’s calm, grounded approach completely changed the trajectory of that interaction. By listening without interruption, validating the patient’s concerns, and explaining the plan of care clearly, she transformed the patient’s emotional state. The patient went from angry and overwhelmed to calm, cooperative, and receptive within minutes. This shift had a real, measurable impact. A calmer patient is more willing to engage in assessment, follow instructions, and participate in their care plan. It also reduces the risk of safety issues, emotional harm, or further dissatisfaction.
April’s communication didn’t just soothe the patient — it created the conditions for effective clinical care to continue. Her actions also had a significant impact on the rest of the team and me. In a moment when I could have easily felt overwhelmed, April’s presence and support helped me stay focused and confident. She modeled how to handle emotionally charged situations with professionalism and empathy, reinforcing the standards we strive to uphold. Her leadership strengthened teamwork, reduced stress, and ensured that our unit functioned smoothly despite the demands of the night. April’s ability to balance patient needs, staff support, and unit stability is exceptional. She consistently elevates the environment around her, and her actions have a lasting impact on patient experience, staff morale, and overall quality of care.
That night showed me exactly why April represents the best of clinical leadership, compassionate communication, and patient advocacy. We were hit with four admissions all at once, and it was just the two of us trying to manage everything. She was present, hands‑on, and fully engaged in supporting me. One of the patients I received was extremely upset about her experience in the ER. The moment she arrived, she was swearing, shaking, and clearly overwhelmed. She felt ignored, dismissed, and confused about why she still didn’t have answers or relief for the issue that brought her in. I could see how quickly the situation could escalate, especially with the pace of the night and the stress she was carrying.
April stepped in with this calm, grounded presence that immediately shifted the tone. She didn’t interrupt or try to shut the patient down. She let her speak freely, letting her vent without judgment. She listened with full attention, not just hearing the words, but picking up on the fear and frustration underneath them. She validated the patient’s feelings without feeding into the anger, and she repeated back key concerns so the patient knew she was truly being heard. I watched the patient’s entire demeanor change right in front of me. Her shoulders relaxed. Her voice softened. She stopped swearing. She went from frazzled and furious to calm, receptive, and even grateful. It was incredible to witness how April’s communication skills transformed the interaction. She didn’t just de‑escalate the situation; she helped the patient feel safe, respected, and genuinely cared for. April managed to support me and support a patient who desperately needed someone to meet her where she was emotionally. Moments like that are exactly why I see her as an outstanding nurse, an exceptional charge nurse, a natural clinical leader. She embodies the values we strive for, and she demonstrates them effortlessly, even in the most chaotic moments.
