April worked with a patient with end-stage lung disease. April met with the patient to discuss goals of care and end of life wishes, and the patient told April she was ready to die with dignity. The patient was on a particular type of oxygen called heated high flow, delivered via nasal cannula. The patient was alert, oriented and able to make her own decisions, but would not be able to come off of the oxygen and live. The patient's five children would visit and alternate stays and April got to the know the family, answered their questions, and was able to help them decide to take the patient off of the oxygen. Through April's conversations with the family, we were able to learn of the patient's spiritual views and love of her family, her favorite color, caring for her children, etc. When the time came to remove the oxygen, the family surrounded the patient with love and song. April was invited by the family to come into the room with them; when she wasn't in the room, she was outside by the door in case the family, or patient, needed her. She never left the floor.
We had another patient who passed away unexpectedly, and April's shift was over. Once again April stayed until the patient's daughter arrived and stayed for some time to help the daughter.
April has a huge heart and lots of empathy for our patients and families. She would just say she's doing her job, but it's so much more, she's very special to our staff and patients.
