April Lewis, RN
I would like to recognize April for the extraordinary compassion, patience, and dedication she demonstrates toward her patients every day.
Since April transitioned from the ED to Behavioral Health I believe almost a year ago, she has made a remarkable impact on the unit. From Security’s perspective, I have observed a significant decrease in Security Assist and Active Threat calls from Behavioral Health. Although maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment is a team effort, April’s ability to connect with patients, earn their trust, and de-escalate difficult situations has contributed greatly to that improvement.
Many nurses provide excellent care, but what stands out about April is the time she takes to truly understand each patient. She does not simply address their immediate needs; she sits with them, listens to them, and works to understand what they may be feeling or experiencing. Her patience and compassion allow her to reach patients who may be withdrawn, frightened, frustrated, or unwilling to communicate.
I have also witnessed the impact of April’s care on a personal level. A family member of mine was receiving treatment in Behavioral Health, and April was able to bring my aunt out of her shell. Through her kindness and encouragement, April got her talking, interacting with others, and even dancing again. Seeing that change in my aunt meant more to me and my family than April probably realizes. It was a small but powerful example of the positive impact she has on her patients every day.
April’s care extends beyond completing her assigned duties. She makes her patients feel seen, heard, valued, and respected during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Her compassion benefits her patients, their families, her coworkers, and the overall safety and environment of the Behavioral Health unit.
April represents the qualities the DAISY Award was created to recognize. It is time that she receives recognition for the extraordinary work she has already done and continues to do each day. “
