The DAISY Nurse Leader Award is awarded to nursing leaders who create a workplace where compassionate care thrives - and nurses deliver the quality of care that DAISY celebrates. It recognizes how leaders make a difference in patient care by making a difference through their leadership. We are excited to present this award today to a nurse leader who is a positive role model and an inspiring representative of nursing for the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society Visiting Nurse Program. Serving as the Director of Nursing for over three years and guiding the Visiting Nursing Program through the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, this nurse leader showed the utmost commitment to the mission and unwavering devotion to duty.

This nurse readily stepped up to cover the Director of Nursing position while still managing her clinical responsibilities as a Great Lakes, IL visiting nurse. Leveraging her already extensive years of experience and clinical expertise with the visiting nurse program, she incorporated superb tactical insights into her strategic leadership approach to the program which focused on shared governance. During the tumultuous changes that the COVID-19 pandemic brought, she united her nurses to think outside the box and use the patient as their guide to meet the needs of the patients virtually. She also led the nurses to create a comprehensive policy and procedure manual for the Visiting Nurse Program. This living document streamlined the program and gives clear and concise guidance. Furthermore, she overhauled the entire education and training orientation for new nurses and offered evidenced-based classes ensuring the education nurses offered was as up-to-date and relevant as possible. The environment created by this individual was a significant contributing factor in how visiting nurses cared for their patients.

She also took on a series of collateral duties such as the HIPPA compliance nurse, infection control nurse, and charting subject matter expert where she similarly ensured the most current guidance. This individual made it a priority to recognize nurses and nursing team members for their achievements and created an environment of compassion and recognition for others.

What really sets this individual apart is her ability to remain accessible to colleagues and her willingness to share expertise as she helps others develop their full potential in advancing their nursing careers. She is a superb human being, a steady supporter, and a generous mentor. There is no doubt that the nursing profession at the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society Visiting Nurse Program has arrived at a better place because of the efforts of this Nurse Leader. The DAISY Nurse Leader is presented to Ms. April Pearson, BS, RN, IBCLC.
