I am honored to recognize Apollo Apilan for his extraordinary compassion, dedication, and the lasting impact he has on his patients and their families.

Two years ago, Apollo cared for a patient and his family during one of the most difficult moments of their lives. This past April, while I was suit shopping for my son’s prom, I unexpectedly met the patient’s son. During our conversation, he shared a story that deeply moved me and reminded me of the incredible difference nurses can make.

Even after two years, he still remembered Apollo’s name because of the profound impact Apollo had on both his father and their entire family. The son explained that Apollo’s attention to detail was exceptional—not only toward the patient, but also toward the family. He spoke about how Apollo went above and beyond to provide comfort, reassurance, and compassionate care during such a vulnerable time.

What touched me most was hearing that Apollo returned the following day, on his own day off, simply to check on the family and make sure they were doing okay. That act of genuine kindness and selflessness left an unforgettable impression on them. The son stated that he will forever be grateful to Apollo and to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital for the amazing care his father received.

As Apollo’s colleague, I can confidently say this level of care is not unusual for him—it is who he is every single day. Apollo provides exceptional care to all of his patients without ever expecting recognition or anything in return. He never complains, is always positive, and truly loves what he does. His kindness, humility, and dedication shine through in every interaction he has with patients, families, and coworkers alike.

Apollo is the definition of an exceptional nurse with an incredible heart. He consistently embodies compassion, empathy, professionalism, and selfless service. He does not just care for patients medically—he cares for them as human beings, and that is something families remember forever.
