Even on subsequent shifts when she was not assigned to my father, Annika went out of her way to answer his call light, check on his comfort, and advocate for his needs, modeling a standard of care that went beyond routine expectations.
Annika exemplified the compassionate, patient-centered care that the DAISY Award is intended to honor, providing extraordinary support to my 97-year-old father and to our family during a frightening hospitalization. My father was admitted with an acute myocardial infarction resulting in severe right heart failure, a circumstance that was both medically serious and emotionally overwhelming for him and for our family.

After careful consideration, we elected to pursue medical management with a focus on maximizing his comfort, which required a nurse who could balance clinical vigilance with exceptional sensitivity to his goals of care. From the first morning she cared for him, Annika treated my father as though he were her only patient, demonstrating a consistently calm, reassuring, and present demeanor at the bedside. She took the time to genuinely learn who he is as a person, honoring both who he is now and who he has been, and used that understanding to individualize her care in a way that brought him comfort and dignity.

Annika was meticulous in ensuring that my father understood what was happening with his condition and treatment, explaining changes and interventions in terms he could grasp despite his fatigue. She listened patiently when he struggled to find his words, never rushing him, and sustained meaningful, person-centered conversations over the three shifts she directly cared for him, which clearly reflected a special connection with both patient and family.

Even on subsequent shifts when she was not assigned to my father, Annika went out of her way to answer his call light, check on his comfort, and advocate for his needs, modeling a standard of care that went beyond routine expectations. She also shared his unique sense of humor and “quirky charm” with other nurses, helping the team see him as more than a diagnosis and fostering a warm, supportive environment around his care. Above all, Annika’s attitude, professionalism, and genuine kindness gave my sister and me confidence that our father was receiving the best possible care, easing our anxiety during an intensely stressful time. Her consistent presence, small gestures, quiet reassurances, and shared jokes made a terrible situation bearable, supporting not only my father's recovery but also our own emotional healing as a family, which is precisely the type of extraordinary nursing the DAISY Award seeks to recognize.
