October 2026 Honoree
Annika Barsness, BSN, RN
Annika Barsness exemplifies the qualities that make an outstanding nurse: compassion, clinical excellence, critical thinking, dedication to her patients, and a genuine commitment to supporting those around her. When she first began her nursing career in oncology several years ago, she was a new nurse eager to learn and develop her skills. Since then, she has grown tremendously in both confidence and clinical expertise. Watching her progression has been remarkable. She has developed into a knowledgeable, thoughtful, and highly dependable oncology nurse who is now trusted to onboard and mentor new nurses. Her growth is a testament to her dedication to learning and commitment to excellent patient care.
One of her greatest strengths is her ability to think critically and ask thoughtful questions. She does not simply complete tasks; she takes the time to understand the clinical picture and consider what is truly in the patient's best interest. She is extremely thorough when preparing for clinic and reviewing patient charts. Her attention to detail allows her to identify needs and potential issues before the patient arrives, often preventing delays or unnecessary additional visits. There have been numerous occasions when her careful chart preparation and clinical awareness have saved patients an additional trip to the clinic. She recognizes when something needs to be addressed proactively and works to ensure the appropriate information, orders, appointments, or resources are in place ahead of time.
For a patient navigating cancer treatment, avoiding an unnecessary trip to the hospital can make a tremendous difference. Her preparation demonstrates that she is always thinking beyond the immediate task and considering the patient's overall experience. She is also a strong patient advocate. She works hard to make sure her patients have what they need and understands that excellent nursing care sometimes means slowing down and giving a patient additional time. She takes the extra few minutes to explain treatment, answer questions, clarify instructions, or make sure a patient understands what to expect next. Annika creates an environment where patients feel comfortable asking questions and expressing concerns. This is particularly meaningful in oncology, where patients and families can feel overwhelmed by diagnoses, complex treatment plans, medications, and appointments. She recognizes that what may seem routine to a healthcare professional can feel unfamiliar or frightening to a patient. She takes the time to meet patients where they are and ensure they feel supported. Her impact extends beyond her patients. She is thoughtful, kind, dependable, and genuinely a joy to work with. Her colleagues know they can count on her.
As Annika has gained experience, she has naturally become someone others look to for guidance and support. The fact that she is now onboarding new nurses speaks volumes about the confidence her team has in her knowledge, judgment, and ability to teach. What I admire most is that despite how much she has grown professionally, she has never lost the kindness and humility that make her such a wonderful nurse. She continues to ask questions, learn, and approach her work with genuine care. She does not seek recognition for the extra things she does for patients; she simply does them because she wants her patients and colleagues to have the best possible experience. She represents what nursing should be. She combines clinical knowledge with compassion, critical thinking with attention to detail, and efficiency with genuine human connection. Her dedication makes a meaningful difference in the care our patients receive and in the culture of those who work alongside her.
