Her leadership has brought meaningful change to our team.
AnnaMarie's journey in CTICU has been nothing short of inspiring. She started in IMC, then transitioned into CTICU as StaRN Plus. She excelled as an open-heart nurse, then took on the role of a preceptor. She has continuously grown and evolved. Most notably, she has stepped into the Clinical Nurse Coordinator role with confidence, dedication, and true commitment to making our unit stronger.
Her leadership has brought meaningful change to our team. For example, she played a key role in improving our unit’s skin audits, implementing proactive measures to identify and address skin integrity issues based on root cause analyses. She took initiative on creating clear guidance, recognizing and managing skin concerns, ensuring that our patients receive the best possible care.
She has also been instrumental in enhancing pre-operative education for our open-heart program. She not only emphasized the importance of understanding the “why” behind patient care, but also took the extra step of developing educational resources for nurses. By involving multilevel disciplines and units, she was able to put together an educational resource for nurses from other departments like Med-Surg and IMC. This empowered those nurses to provide long-lasting education for our open-heart patients. She has created long-lasting, effective change for the future of this heart program.
These are just a few examples of many changes that she has helped implement since starting in CTICU. Beyond her clinical growth and education contributions, she fosters a sense of unity in our team. She actively organizes outings and encourages team bonding, which aids in creating a culture of support and cohesiveness.
Her leadership extends beyond the bedside; she achieved her Master's in Leadership, further solidifying her commitment to becoming an even stronger nurse leader. This nurse consistently goes above and beyond for her patients, her colleagues, and the entire unit.
As her preceptor early on in her career, I’ve seen tremendous growth in her, and I am so proud of who she has become. She truly deserves Nurse of the Year after all she has executed. However, this DAISY Award is a well-earned recognition of her dedication, hard work, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
Congratulations, Annamarie Astorga of CTICU
