Anna continued to demonstrate calm, composure, caring, and compassion throughout this very long and rigorous day.
I observed Anna demonstrate compassion, patience, and understanding in a really difficult clinical setting. Our shift start and stop times coincided. She took care of a patient who was critically ill with a congenital heart deformity and was transferred to a higher level of care. There was a great deal of extra care required to manage the patient medically and to help interact with the patient's family, who was very concerned and tearful about the patient's prognosis; this required a great deal of her focus and time. She was in a normal floor assignment and was assigned a patient who had significant traumatic injuries. After several minutes of care, it became obvious that this patient, in fact, could have been designated for critical care or trauma activation based on their injuries. They, too, were transferred to a higher level of care and required a great deal of management at the bedside due to the complexity of their injuries and nursing issues that were required. Towards the end of this very harrowing shift, she then had a patient with extreme, dire medical comorbidities and challenges related to her socioeconomic status, and Anna continued to demonstrate calm, composure, caring, and compassion throughout this very long and rigorous day. What I feel like they have observed most of Anna in her time, as she has progressed from a new graduate nurse to a floor nurse, is her persistent kindness and extraordinary nursing skills.
