Angi made sure that this child's last moments here on earth were filled with care and love.
Angi is one of PICU's standout nurses who exemplifies the qualities listed under the DAISY Award in so many ways. There is one example we'd like to highlight where Angi went above and beyond for her patient.
Angi was assigned a chronic patient who had recently transitioned to end-of-life care in our PICU. These situations are always unpredictable, and you can never really know when the time will come. Angi didn't miss a single detail. She cared for the child with deep compassion. The child's condition made an abrupt change early on in the shift, and the family of the patient was not present during this time. As soon as Angi noticed that things were changing, she told the team and immediately attempted to contact the family, asking them to come in.
Things started progressing quicker than expected, and Angi never left that child's side. She did everything in her power to keep them safe and comfortable, and as the end inevitably drew closer, Angi took this child into her arms, wrapped her in a blanket, and sat rocking her until her last breath. Angi made sure that this child's last moments here on earth were filled with care and love. She stayed with her until their family finally arrived, then stayed with them, supporting them.
To see a child die is not easy for anyone. Angi not only had to feel a child's last breath and hear the cries of their family but also had the composure and move on to her other patients, showing them the same level of focus and care. If this doesn't define a DAISY Nurse, then I truly don't know what does.
