a shining example of what it means to be a patient advocate.
Following a routine gynecological surgery, the patient was transferred to the recovery unit under Angie’s care. Vital signs were stable, and the patient was doing very well. Angie and the patient were hopeful to be discharged soon and home comfortably. Although things looked normal at first glance, as time went on, Angie noticed subtle signs that something wasn’t right. The patient was having difficulty voiding, worsening nausea, and her abdominal pain remained, but was not severe. These are common signs seen in the postoperative period and can be easily dismissed as connected to anything emergent. Rather than dismissing these signs, Angie trusted her instincts, continued to perform a thorough assessment, and maintained an advocate for her patient. At this point, the patient had been in recovery for a few hours, and Angie knew things were not getting any better despite her treatments. The patient was more pale and more uncomfortable. She alerted Dr. C, anesthesia, and the surgical team, advocated for additional labs and imaging, and stayed with the patient to monitor her closely. Her persistence revealed what we later confirmed: serious postoperative internal bleeding. The patient was taken back to surgery. Angie then continued to care for the patient as she circulated the case in the operating room, assisting anesthesia with additional IVs and blood administration as well as the surgical team with surgical instruments and medications. The procedure was successful, and had there been any further delay, the outcome could have been much worse, especially if the patient had been sent home. Throughout the day, Angie remained calm, focused, and compassionate, comforting the patient and keeping the family informed. Her attention to detail, critical thinking, and quick action likely saved a life that day. This is more than just excellent nursing; it’s a shining example of what it means to be a patient advocate. Angie Clark exemplifies clinical excellence, vigilance, and the deep compassion that the DAISY Award honors. Her actions reflect the very best of our profession.
