As a fellow Piedmont nurse, I recently became a patient during a heart cath. Even with my nursing background, I was extremely anxious. From the moment Andy came to get me, he treated me with genuine kindness. Before doing anything, he explained each step, so I knew what to expect and could regain a sense of control. When Andy realized that my anxiety wasn’t improving, despite the medication I had received, he looked beyond the medication and found another way to care for me. He asked what kind of music I liked. When I told him gospel music, he immediately played it through the speaker in the procedure room.

Despite additional sedation, I remained awake after the procedure began. Andy then moved the speaker next to my ear so I could focus on it throughout my procedure. His attentiveness and encouragement never wavered. He recognized what I needed in that moment and personalized my care in a way I will never forget. After the procedure, he was the first to tell me everything was normal, and the relief and joy in his voice immediately lifted a tremendous burden from my heart. Andy showed that extraordinary nursing means seeing the person beyond the patient, recognizing their needs, and doing everything possible to bring them comfort. His compassion, attentiveness, and individualized care are exactly what the DAISY award represents, and I am honored to nominate him.
