Amy, who was attending to the baby next to us, approached me with a compassionate expression and offered me some cold water.
I met Amy before she even began working with my daughter. We were having a really rough day here at the NICU. Towards the end of the night, I witnessed the horror that any parent dreads for the second time. My baby stopped breathing for a period, and after that, everything became a blur. What I remember clearly is holding back tears and feeling shaky from the fear and anxiety. At that moment, the sweet, red-haired nurse, Amy, who was attending to the baby next to us, approached me with a compassionate expression and offered me some cold water. Who would have thought that a glass of cold water could mean so much? But it did. A few weeks later, she began working with my baby. After several doctors and nurses had 3 to 4 failed attempts to place an OJ feeding tube in my tiny 25-weeker, the doctor mentioned that we might need to get help from gastroenterology to insert the tube. Then, Amy came to the rescue once again. On her first attempt, that tube was in. I could go on and on about how amazing Amy is. She is one of the best nurses I've met during my 2+ months here at the Santa Clara Kaiser NICU. What a luxury it is to have Amy as a nurse!
