Amy is the definition of compassionate, patient-centered care.
When our family was searching for outpatient wound care for our family member who had recently survived a devastating accident, we were met with closed doors and discouraging answers—until we met Amy. Our family member was struck while working on a traffic light at night. A 21-year-old driving under the influence drove through the work zone barriers and hit an arrow board, which then struck him in the head. He suffered a traumatic brain injury, multiple fractures, and a deep wound on his buttock.

After spending over two and a half months in the hospital, the only path home was through finding outpatient wound care—specifically a clinic that could manage wound vac dressing changes 2–3 times per week. Amy listened closely and compassionately as I explained the situation. She immediately showed empathy—not only for our family member’s medical needs, but for his family situation. He has four young children at home, and getting back to them was urgent for his mental and emotional recovery.

Even though Amy shared that her clinic did not currently have the bandwidth to take on a patient that frequently, she told me she would speak with her manager and do everything she could to help. True to her word, Amy called me back after consulting with her manager. She provided the direct contact information for another hospital in the system that might be able to help, and even gave me the exact words to use when reaching out. Her guidance gave us hope.

However, after many calls to that clinic and over ten other home health agencies, we continued to hit dead ends. Our family member and his wife were growing more and more discouraged, and we didn’t know where else to turn. I called Amy back, not knowing if she could help further—but she didn’t hesitate. Amy took it upon herself to contact the other clinic personally. She spoke to the charge nurse there and helped coordinate an initial appointment.

On top of that, she offered that her own clinic could take on one of the weekly dressing changes, which was incredibly helpful since her site was 45 minutes closer to where our family member lived. When it was determined that the dressing only needed to be changed twice per week, Amy offered to train the family to do the second change.

During our visit with her, Amy was incredibly thorough, patient, and supportive. She explained every step of the process, answered all of our questions, and made sure we felt confident and prepared. Not once did we feel rushed or burdensome, even though she mentioned her department was short-staffed. You would never have known it—Amy made us feel like we were her top priority.

Amy is the definition of compassionate, patient-centered care. She went far beyond what was required or expected, all to ensure our family member could return home safely and receive the care he needed. She could have turned us away, but instead, she became an advocate, a problem-solver, and a partner in healing. Our family is deeply grateful to Amy. She is a shining example of what it means to be a nurse, and we believe she is truly deserving of the DAISY Award.

This is Amy's second DAISY Award!
