Amy Shrader is not only a gift to Woman's Hospital, but a gift to all of the patients that she encounters. Although our community is going through some troubled waters and unknown territory, Amy has handled it like a true warrior. She is ready and willing to help when needed, not asking any questions as to where, who, or what the scenario is. Where many others have shied away from the COVID-19 unit, I have witnessed Amy serving on many occasions, as well as volunteering for the nursery associated with COVID-19. Even if she is tired, weary, and a little uncomfortable underneath all of the PPE, she still presses forward, making a difference to those she cares for.
We had a patient who spiked a temp and could have possibly had the virus. The doctor on call insisted that the nurses not enter the room, that she would perform all necessary tests with the help of one person. The one who stepped up and volunteered was Amy. She gowned up quickly, without hesitation and stood alongside the doctor helping with necessary labs, assessments, and vital signs. With sweat dripping down her face upon leaving the room, I never heard a single negative word or response from her. Afterwards, she prepared herself and the nursery to care for the newborn of this ill mother.
It is obvious that this is her calling! She cares, she assists, and she helps within her scope of practice with a smile on her face, making the most of each situation and always thinking of our patients first. During this troubled time of uncertainty, she is without a doubt, a breath of fresh air and a true nurse on the front lines...one of our heroes!
