September 2026 Honoree
Amy Alexander, RN
A patient on our unit received a devastating diagnosis and prognosis. Amy took the time to sit with him, listen to his concerns, and meet him where he was emotionally. During their conversation, she learned this would be his last Fourth of July, and he was struggling with the reality of having limited time left.
Wanting to make the holiday as meaningful as possible, Amy worked with the attending provider to ensure he could have the best experience possible while in the hospital. Amy contacted Patient Logistics, explained the patient's circumstances, and requested a private room where he could be more comfortable during his final days. She wanted to make sure he had the opportunity to look out the window and watch the fireworks one last time.
After coordinating the move, Amy went a step further. Once the room was cleaned and ready, she arranged for Fourth of July decorations to be delivered and transformed the space with flags, wreaths and battery-operated string lights. The room became festive, welcoming and bright during a difficult time.
When the patient was moved into his newly decorated private room, he became very emotional. Amy's thoughtfulness and compassion helped create a special memory and brought comfort during one of the most challenging moments of his life.
Amy consistently goes above and beyond for her patients. She has an incredibly caring heart and is unwavering in her commitment to advocating for those in her care and treating every patient with dignity and compassion.
Amy deserves the DAISY Award for the extraordinary kindness she showed a man who needed his spirits lifted during an unimaginably difficult time. She is truly a gift to the nursing profession, and both her patients and colleagues appreciate her more than words can express.
