Because of Amer’s quick response, skill, and dedication, as well as all the people that helped, my husband is here today.
I would like to nominate Amer Alsaidi for the DAISY Award because of the extraordinary care, compassion, and courage he showed my husband and our family during one of the worst and most stressful times of our lives. My husband was originally admitted for what we thought would be routine surgery, but complication after complication turned his stay into a long and emotionally overwhelming experience. We ended up staying in the hospital for over 60 days on different floors.
During most of that time, he was cared for on 8 South, where the entire nursing team was wonderful. But Amer truly stood out. At one point, my husband went into cardiac arrest, and a Code Blue was called. He was intubated and transferred to the ICU. After he eventually returned to the unit, Amer came to us to see how we were doing. He wasn’t our nurse that day, but he wanted to share that he had been concerned about my husband and kept following up with the doctor during that morning of the cardiac arrest. He said he was there during the code and had personally done chest compressions on my husband. He told us how grateful he was to see him back with us on the unit and that he had the opportunity to be able to go home. Hearing that from the person who helped save my husband’s life is something my family will never forget.
Throughout his time as my husband’s nurse, Amer showed so much compassion and genuine kindness. He constantly advocated for him, kept us in constant communication, made sure his needs were met, and always ensured he was safe and comfortable. He carried himself with calm, gentle confidence that made us feel reassured, even with all the stress of what was going on. When Amer was caring for my husband, we truly felt that we were in good hands. When his manager came to visit us on the day of my husband’s discharge, I made sure to repeatedly mention Amer’s name because that’s how great a nurse he was for my husband. Because of Amer’s quick response, skill, and dedication, as well as all the people that helped, my husband is here today. We will forever be grateful to him.
