She didn’t just care for my mom; she got her to laugh and was an advocate and voice for my mom to her doctors.
On Saturday morning, my mom had a bad fall at home, and after taking her to the ER, she was transferred up to Fairview and eventually ended up on your floor. Mom was cared for by a nurse named Amber Romel. My mom has had a number of medical issues, and her current ones are a bit complex, so our family has spent quite a bit of time caring for my mom and visiting her in the hospital. My mom was transferred to your floor on Sunday. When my brother and I came to visit her on Sunday, she was sitting in her room crying. She was scared, mentally exhausted (she is recovering from 2 strokes that happened in the last year), and afraid that the doctors were missing something and dropping the ball. We called her nurse in there to see what was going on and to voice our concerns, and Amber came and spoke with us. She gave us her full attention, calmed my mom down, and immediately addressed my mom’s needs. She went above and beyond in going over everything. She didn’t just care for my mom; she got her to laugh and was an advocate and voice for my mom to her doctors. Later that day, Amber called me to let me know that she was still working on tying up some ends on the things we had discussed but that before she left for the day, they would be taken care of. The next day when I went to go see my mom, Amber came in to explain the plan of care with us and even joked about some of the remodeling home details that my mom had shared with her that day. Amber probably has a number of other patients that she has taken care of in the last couple of days, but she made my mom (and us) feel like we had her full and devoted attention. She didn’t just care for her physically, but she had a huge impact on her as a whole and was just the best advocate that we could ask for. We have met a lot of nurses through the last year or so, and we were just so impressed with her amazing bedside manner and drive to find answers for my mom. I just thought you should know how impressed we were. My mom may not be able to vocalize it, but our whole family has been so grateful that she has taken care of our mom!
