Her leadership fosters trust, respect, and professional growth—directly impacting both staff experience and patient outcomes.
Amber consistently demonstrates exceptional role-modeling behavior. She creates an environment grounded in trust, compassion, mutual respect, continuous professional development, and strong ethical standards. She motivates staff with a shared vision and genuine enthusiasm, inspiring better outcomes for both team members and the patients they serve. Amber also actively promotes and elevates the image of nursing within the organization, the community, and the profession.

She has been an incredible support during my transition into my new role—always answering questions, offering guidance, and fostering an open and welcoming environment. Not only did she help me, but she also helped navigate the transition of a new director and assistant manager, offering them the same level of support and commitment.

Amber, thank you for contributing to my professional growth and for uplifting those around you. I appreciate you more than you know.

Amber Middleton exemplifies the essence of the DAISY Leadership Award by consistently creating an environment where compassionate, high-quality patient care can thrive through the support and development of her team. Her leadership fosters trust, respect, and professional growth—directly impacting both staff experience and patient outcomes.

One day, we had a very busy shift and had to pivot to an OR at a different "wing" of the hospital. There were also other emergencies happening. At the same time, a labor patient from our unit was getting married at the entrance. As everything happened all at once, there was Amber, dressed in scrubs, helping me circulate in the new OR space and telling me to call her when I was done. Amber told me to focus on taking care of mom/baby, and she would clean and turn over the OR space. I have never felt more supported!

Amber is highly accessible, responsive, and deeply invested in her team. She is always available to answer clinical questions, particularly within her specialty in the Operating Room, and ensures staff feel confident in delivering safe, competent care. If she does not immediately have an answer, she prioritizes finding one quickly. This level of responsiveness creates a culture of psychological safety where nurses feel supported and empowered.

Beyond being a clinical resource, Amber is an exceptional problem-solver who actively develops leadership in others. Rather than simply providing solutions, she guides staff through critical thinking, encouraging them to build confidence and autonomy in decision-making. This approach strengthens the team’s overall competency and aligns with DAISY’s emphasis on fostering professional development and resilience within nursing teams.

Amber is also a powerful advocate for her staff. She ensures their needs are heard, supported, and communicated effectively, while also clearly sharing organizational priorities. Even while managing a high-acuity department with a heavy census, she maintains a calm, positive presence that reassures and stabilizes her team. Her leadership creates a work environment grounded in trust, consistency, and mutual respect.

What truly distinguishes Amber is her extraordinary compassion. She takes the time to listen—fully and without distraction—making each team member feel heard and valued. In a fast-paced healthcare environment, this intentional presence is rare and deeply meaningful. She understands that emotional support is essential to maintaining a strong and resilient nursing team.

Amber also goes above and beyond to recognize and celebrate her staff. Through handwritten notes for meaningful occasions—such as birthdays, work anniversaries, bereavements, and professional milestones—she ensures every individual feels appreciated. These personal gestures have had a lasting impact on staff morale and engagement, with many employees expressing how these moments made them feel valued and proud to be part of Cone Health.

She builds meaningful relationships with her team, taking time to know their lives beyond work—their families, interests, and even small personal details. These connections foster a true sense of belonging and reinforce a culture of compassion that extends from staff to patients.

Amber leads by example in every aspect of her role. She actively participates in organizational initiatives focused on wellbeing and professional growth, while encouraging her team to do the same. She models the values of nursing through her actions, inspiring those around her to strive for excellence.

Through her accessibility, advocacy, compassion, and commitment to developing others, Amber Middleton creates an environment where nurses can provide exceptional, compassionate care. Her leadership has a profound and lasting impact on both her team and the patients they serve.

Amber Middleton is the definition of a DAISY Nurse Leader, and I cannot think of anyone more deserving.
