In April my daughter underwent her third surgery to remove a cyst from her spinal tumor. After spending one day in the PICU, she was transferred to the Pediatric Medical Floor 2F. When we arrived, Amanda Young warmly greeted my daughter, my husband, and me. She was friendly and kind, just like all the other nurses on the floor, but what truly set Amanda apart was her attention to detail and the small, thoughtful ways she showed she cared.
From the moment we met her, Amanda made my daughter feel special. One of her first acts of kindness was arranging for a mini refrigerator in the hospital room after learning that we had to bring in food due to her multiple food allergies. My daughter has 14 food allergies and sensitivities so having a dedicated fridge to keep her food safe meant a lot. Later, while checking out the family room, I noticed there were gluten-free Made Good granola bars available. My daughter was excited; these particular flavors aren’t available in our hometown of Reading, PA, so she was happy to try something new. When I went back later to get another bar and found the box empty, I let Amanda know. Without hesitation, she went up to the third floor and came back with more flavors for us to enjoy.
Amanda didn’t just meet our basic needs, she went above and beyond. We had meaningful conversations about local restaurants with gluten-free options and grocery store finds. My daughter usually avoids talking about her allergies because most people don’t understand, but Amanda did. Her empathy and insight, perhaps strengthened by her experience with her gluten-intolerant boyfriend, made us feel more comfortable.
Another thoughtful gesture Amanda made was reaching out to my daughter’s former physical therapist, whom she had a great connection with, to see if she could visit. Although the therapist was off that day, the fact that Amanda took the initiative without us even asking meant a lot. These are just a few examples of the kindness Amanda showed during our stay. Her compassion, attentiveness, and personal touches truly brightened my daughter’s hospital experience.
Amanda's little acts of kindness really did make a big difference! Thank you, Amanda!
