We have been here for six days so far, this time around, and find ourselves quite familiar with Arnold Palmer Hospital's facility and care. In addition to treatment and diagnostics for normal childhood illnesses, my daughter has a solitary right kidney, has required three brain surgeries, a lumbar puncture, and a lumbar drain. She also suffers from a 48-degree curvature of her spine, central sleep apnea, arthritis, and a long history of inconclusive gastrointestinal issues. Despite having countless interactions with nurses, I have never been inspired to nominate anyone. That was until we met Amanda.
Most simply put, Amanda Simmons should be your Ambassador of First Impressions and Positivity! She exemplifies care and compassion for her ailing patients. She enthusiastically greets everyone: co-workers, patients, and family members alike, with respect and genuine smiles, as she passes them in the halls. We've noticed she is consistently called by her peers to collaborate/assist in other patient rooms and has overheard open praise and gratitude for her outstanding and tireless support. She has also been exceptionally professional and knowledgeable about my daughter's surgical procedures and even shared some cutting-edge advancements in a variety of her treatment areas.
Furthermore, Amanda has been remarkably patient while educating us on how to use and care for my daughter's G-Tube. We truly believe Amanda shows a sincere, vested interest in her recovery. When we had some concerns, she listened and introduced us to leadership to seek a remedy. While my daughter is almost 21-years-old, and not your traditional (tender-aged) pediatric patient, Amanda has also been a tremendous asset to me, helping me advocate, encourage, and facilitate inclusion in her care plan.
It is with great appreciation and confidence that I write this letter nominating Amanda Simmons for a DAISY Award. I cannot think of anyone, in our many encounters that better deserves it!
My daughter's medical history is quite complex. Trust is not something she generally extends, especially not in such a short time; nonetheless, Amanda is phenomenal, and we have come to love and adore her.
