She has taken the time to ensure they have the comforts they miss from outside the hospital, often thinking of the little things that bring them joy and a sense of familiarity.
It is with deep appreciation and admiration that I nominate Amanda Melia, RN, for the DAISY Award. Amanda is an extraordinary nurse on our Complex Medicine Unit who has gone far beyond the expectations of her role to provide compassionate, whole-person care to her patients. In particular, two people have been on the 5D Unit for over 6 months. During the time the long-term patients have been under Amanda’s attentive care, she has made a significant and lasting impact on their well-being—not only physically but also emotionally and socially. Amanda recognized the toll that prolonged hospitalization can take on a person, especially the isolation, boredom, and emotional fatigue that often accompany such extended stays. Rather than allowing these patients to be forgotten or withdrawn, Amanda and her teammates have made it their mission to help them maintain a sense of normalcy and dignity. She has taken the time to ensure they have the comforts they miss from outside the hospital, often thinking of the little things that bring them joy and a sense of familiarity. She personally buys them meals that reflect their cultural background and or their favorite snacks. She has purchased lottery tickets; however, no winning tickets. This was at the patient's request. She and her colleagues have made sure the patients get outside for fresh air and sunshine.

These moments that may seem small, but are deeply meaningful in the context of what feels like long-term care. She has encouraged the patients to engage with other patients as appropriate and participate in activities on the unit. Through these efforts, the patients have found moments of lightness, laughter, and belonging—despite the many challenges they face. What has truly set Amanda apart, beyond the personal care and dedication she shows daily, is the following. One patient had been asking about his mail for months. He had previously been receiving it at a church while experiencing homelessness. Amanda tracked down the church using the location the patient provided. She contacted the staff and worked with them to retrieve his mail. This was an act of compassion that reconnected this patient to an important part of his identity and life beyond the hospital walls. He thoroughly enjoyed taking the time to go through his mail, which contained very important information that needed to be shared with our unit social worker. Amanda’s empathy, attention to detail, and holistic approach to nursing exemplify the values of the DAISY Award. Her patients are not just being treated—they are being seen, heard, and cared for in the truest sense of the word. It is caregivers like Amanda who remind us of the heart of nursing. With great respect and gratitude.
