We met Amanda the next day, as she accompanied my son to all his tests. She held his hand when I couldn't, despite his age.
After an X-ray and sonogram at another hospital, our pediatrician told me to get my seventeen-year-old son to the ER at Hackensack, as there was a mass under the bump on his chest. We had no idea what that meant and took just our naive selves to the hospital. My son was admitted to the PICU that night and we remained there for two weeks. We met Amanda the next day, as she accompanied my son to all his tests. She held his hand when I couldn't, despite his age. We were told that he had a large tumor in his chest that sometimes gave him irregular heartbeats. The doctors felt that it was in my son's best interest to remain in the PICU for monitoring. He has germ cell cancer and would need twelve weeks of chemotherapy to begin fighting against the cancer. He began his treatment in the PICU, and Amanda was with us as often as she could be. She always went above and beyond to explain things, help me navigate his care, and answer any questions that I may have had. She was our support as she took excellent care of my son and me. For his next round of inpatient chemo, my son was admitted to the oncology floor. Amanda came to visit us to make sure our transition was smooth. I knew that she was a dedicated professional while we were in the PICU, but visiting us on the oncology floor was just so thoughtful. For my son's next inpatient treatment, Amanda brought him a hot chocolate and reminded him of how far he has come. She is just a wonderful, caring nurse, and we are so grateful to her.
