As he approached the end of his life, Mandi spent most of her day in his room, ensuring he was comfortable, and he knew someone was there caring for him.
We had an ALS patient on the unit who was vent-dependent and did not have anywhere else to go. He was here for many years, and as his disease progressed, he started becoming difficult to work with. There were many times police were involved due to his behavior, and even escalated to death threats to staff members. Despite his behavioral issues, Mandi always provided exceptional care for the veteran and even requested to be his nurse.

As he approached the end of his life, Mandi spent most of her day in his room, ensuring he was comfortable, and he knew someone was there caring for him. She would hold his hand, wipe his eyes, play his favorite songs, and even sing to him. It was common knowledge that he loved her singing. I truly feel there is no one else who would have shown him that level of care or respect, and even though he lost the ability to communicate, you could see the kindness and love in his eyes. Mandi's dedication to providing the best care possible is second to none, volunteering to stay late to care for him, even after his death.

When a veteran passes at the VA, the floor staff and any available patients are allowed to give their final respects to a fallen hero. Many times, family members are present for this; however, due to the distance and conflicts with his children's schedules, his family could not attend. Mandi ensured that even though his family could not physically be there, they could still participate by video. We waited until his family could get on a video chat so they could witness their dad's and her husband's final salute. Mandi’s commitment to serving the veterans and holistic care demonstrates her qualifications as a DAISY Award nominee.
