She treated me like a mother who has feelings that actually matter. She showed me that my feelings do still matter. What she did means more to me than I can find words to explain.
Many times, I have been confronted about my background and status as a methadone patient. Every time this topic has come up for discussion, it has been deemed irrelevant to my baby's care, and I have been told by the doctors that further inquiry and toxicology testing are unnecessary. Yet, each day, it is mentioned again in briefings to update new nurses and doctors. Again, during rounds, the topic of toxicology was brought up, and the leading doctor told everyone present to remove the issue from the report as it was not a concern and further mention of it was unnecessary. After this happened, the nurse I'm nominating came to me when we were alone and apologized, she said "I'm sorry toxicology keeps getting brought up, it is not something the doctor is concerned about." What she did changed my life because I had never been acknowledged as a person with real feelings before by a nurse or doctor. She treated me like a mother who has feelings that actually matter. She showed me that my feelings do still matter. What she did means more to me than I can find words to explain. She gave me faith that the past that haunts me I might one day be free from, and with the laws that change, people change too. She also had taken the best care of my baby girl out of all her other nurses.
