ER Assistant Clinical Directors Andrea Hansen and Alyssa Duenas promptly ceased their work and proceeded to the ICU at the other hospital to offer their support.
On the evening of Monday, Emergency Department (ER) Assistant Clinical Director (ACD) J received a distressing phone call from one of her newly hired nurses’ spouses. He informed J that after a brief hospital stay, his wife was in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of another hospital. J promptly notified our leadership team and informed us that the husband was requesting assistance to provide support to himself and their children. As he lacked medical expertise and comprehension of medical terminology, he requested that someone assist them in navigating this challenging situation. ER Assistant Clinical Directors Andrea Hansen and Alyssa Duenas promptly ceased their work and proceeded to the ICU at the other hospital to offer their support. Upon their arrival, they discovered that the nurse had been admitted to emergency neurosurgery. After the surgery, they communicated with the neurosurgeon and conveyed his message to the spouse.
Additionally, they provided general explanations to the family and separately to their children, ensuring that the information was comprehensible to them. These two leaders demonstrated exceptional compassion and unwavering commitment to supporting the spouse of a nurse within our department. They readily abandoned their assigned responsibilities to assist an RN and her family during a time of need. I am deeply honored to recognize the exemplary qualities of my team members who embody compassion and accessibility. These leaders embody the essence of nursing and nursing leadership. Their efforts have fostered a culture of respect and accessibility, enabling our team and their families to seek support at any time and for any reason. I am honored to nominate Andrea Hansen and Alyssa Duenas for the DAISY Nurse Leader Award for their unwavering kindness, compassion, and willingness to provide immediate assistance to the family of our nurse in critical condition. I am immensely proud to have these exceptional leaders on our team in the Emergency department at the Kaiser Permanente Moreno Valley.
