She absolutely would not have survived until morning if she hadn't received this surgery, and she would not have gotten the surgery if it weren't for this nurse.
Alyson and I worked together to take care of a very sick patient, a young pregnant woman who came in with abdominal pain. It was not immediately clear what was wrong with her, and as it was later in the day, there were several logistical roadblocks to obtaining additional imaging and workup. It would have been very easy to state that obtaining the imaging was not possible until the next day, but Alyson instead spent a significant amount of time coordinating the studies, working with multiple departments, and at one point using her "mom voice" to ensure that the ultrasound tech came in to do the necessary scan. Due largely to her hard work and perseverance, done all while helping calm and reassure this terrified, pregnant woman, we were able to determine that the patient had a ruptured ectopic pregnancy and was actively bleeding into her abdomen. She was scheduled for emergency surgery immediately after, and by the time she arrived in the OR, her hemoglobin was 4.6, meaning that she had lost almost 75% of the blood in her body. The surgery was a success, and she rapidly recovered over the next few days in the ICU. She absolutely would not have survived until morning if she hadn't received this surgery, and she would not have gotten the surgery if it weren't for this nurse. This nurse consistently goes above and beyond in ensuring that her patients receive the best and most timely care possible. While this case isn't the only one, it exemplifies her excellent care for her patients, and I want to make sure her dedication and professionalism are recognized.
