Alma not only handled my mother with kindness, dignity, and appropriate good humor, but she also managed to expertly explain her processes to her student nurse, allowing her to practice with confidence.
I would like to nominate Amy (Alma) Uy from the Kennedy ED unit/department as a deserving recipient of The DAISY Award. This nurse’s clinical skill and especially her compassionate care exemplify the kind of nurse that our patients, their families, and our staff recognize as an outstanding role model. She consistently meets all of the following criteria:
Consistently demonstrates excellence through expertise, extraordinary service and compassionate care. The nurse goes above and beyond and works well with the Interdisciplinary team. Values include:
• Caring • Integrity • Advocacy • Respect • Accountability • Competency

I brought my 82-year-old mother to the Kennedy ED with a complaint of severe neck pain. Alma Uy, who goes by the nickname Amy, was assigned as her RN and she had a student nurse shadowing her. My mother was not feeling well, but her situation was not life-threatening. She has a complex medical history, mild cognitive impairment, and is generally disagreeable on her best days. Alma not only handled my mother with kindness, dignity, and appropriate good humor, but she also managed to expertly explain her processes to her student nurse, allowing her to practice with confidence. At no point did I feel that the student was unprepared to care for my mom or that Amy had been demeaning or dismissive to the student in any way. Amy’s professional attitude with her student assured me that my mom was in good hands with her.

When it was time to discharge my mother, her ileostomy appliance had leaked all over her pants, and we had not brought supplies to change her. It was then that I realized that Alma was not just a good nurse, she was outstanding. What had been a stressful situation for my mother was immediately calmed down by Alma’s demeanor. She was completely unflustered. She went to the supply room, grabbed the proper ileostomy supplies, and proceeded to not only expertly clean and change my mom’s appliance with dignity and compassion, but also explain and teach her student every step of the way, allowing her to help when appropriate.

Alma not only lives by the values of excellence in nursing, but she is generously mentoring them onto our next generation of nurses.  I cannot thank Alma enough for the care she gave my mother.
