She didn’t just care for me — she protected me, believed me, and helped me feel safe during one of the scariest nights of my life.
I am nominating Nurse Allie Brouhard for the DAISY Award because she provided life-saving advocacy, compassion, and protection during one of the most frightening experiences of my life. I had recently been transferred to this hospital for an EEG and further treatment after a traumatic motor vehicle accident. When I arrived, shift change was beginning, and the attending physician who first met with me clearly explained the plan: no changes to my medications and no new medications added, so my ongoing treatment could continue safely and consistently.
I was quietly waiting in tears, terrified and unsure what would happen next —until Nurse Allie Brouhard walked into my room.
That moment changed everything.
Allie immediately recognized the severity of the situation. She saw the medication discrepancies, saw the swelling from my angioedema, and saw the fear in my face. She listened to me — fully, patiently, without judgment. She validated my concerns, supported me emotionally, and took the necessary steps to correct the errors.
Allie contacted the attending physician directly, ensured he reviewed my case again, and, within minutes, helped secure the correct medication orders exactly as intended. The attending physician apologized for what had happened, and thanks to Allie’s advocacy, my original treatment plan was reinstated and protected.
Allie didn’t just give me medical care —she restored my trust, safety, and dignity.
When I was crying and overwhelmed, she hugged me. She comforted me gently, with the kind of compassion that cannot be taught — it comes from the heart. She provided ice chips, warm blankets, and even went out of her way to request a heated therapy pad machine because she saw how much pain I was in. She cared for my facial injuries, bruising, and blisters with such tenderness that I felt seen and human again, not just like another patient in a bed.
She monitored me closely, reassured me, and made sure no one altered my care without proper evaluation. She made me feel safe enough to rest — something I had been unable to do since arriving. For the first time in days, I closed my eyes, knowing that someone was truly watching over me.
Allie prevented dangerous mistakes from occurring. She gave me my voice back when I felt powerless. She made sure my care aligned with what was medically correct — not what was convenient. Her advocacy may very well have saved my life.
Nurse Allie Brouhard is a rare kind of nurse — the kind who goes above and beyond because she genuinely cares. If I were in a situation where my life was on the line, she is the nurse I would want by my side. She brings safety, empathy, and integrity into her work in a way that changes patients’ lives.
I am writing this in tears because I am overwhelmingly grateful for her. She didn’t just care for me — she protected me, believed me, and helped me feel safe during one of the scariest nights of my life.
If anyone deserves the DAISY Award, it is Nurse Allie Brouhard. She is truly exceptional, and I will never forget how she made me feel safe, heard, and cared for at a time when I desperately needed it.
