It is with great respect and heartfelt gratitude that I nominate Allan Dahl, RN, for the DAISY Award in recognition of the extraordinary care he provided to our friend and family member during her stay on the geriatric psychiatric unit at United Hospital.

Our loved one was admitted after several difficult weeks in other hospital settings, where she struggled with medication changes, emotional outbursts, and a deep mistrust of healthcare staff. From the very beginning of her stay at United Hospital, Allan’s calm presence, steady leadership, and genuine compassion created a sense of safety and trust that had been missing for weeks. His ability to remain patient, composed, and reassuring during moments of distress was remarkable and deeply meaningful to both our loved one and our entire family.

Allan consistently took the time to explain treatment plans, medications, and next steps in clear, understandable language. He ensured that we were not only informed but also emotionally supported during an exhausting and uncertain period. His empathy extended beyond clinical care; he truly saw our loved one as a person, not just a patient, and he treated her with dignity, respect, and kindness at all times.

What stood out most was Allan’s willingness to go above and beyond his already demanding responsibilities. Even when he was not directly available, he thoughtfully coordinated with other staff to ensure her needs were met promptly and compassionately. We also observed him mentoring a student nurse during this time, demonstrating his commitment to teaching and modeling the highest standards of nursing practice. Despite these many responsibilities, he never lost sight of the emotional challenges our family was experiencing, and he consistently offered reassurance and guidance.

After 46 years of service, Allan Dahl continues to exemplify the very essence of nursing excellence, professionalism, clinical expertise, mentorship, and, above all, heartfelt compassion. His care made a profound difference during a very vulnerable time in our loved one’s life, and it restored our confidence in the healing power of truly patient-centered care.

If every nurse demonstrated the same pride, empathy, and dedication that Allan shows each day, the healthcare experience for patients and families everywhere would be transformed.
