Alissa dealt with a very tough situation today on the day shift. Alissa had a patient with a psychiatric history who attempted to leave AMA. Alissa called all the required people to attempt to get this patient to the right place. After several discussions with psych, they cleared the patient to leave AMA. Alissa received a phone call from the patient’s husband, urging her to try and help his wife stay in the hospital, as the patient had been suicidal in the past and he was very concerned for her safety. After a heartfelt conversation with the patient, the patient decided not to leave AMA. The patient decided to stay in the hospital and look at going to an outpatient psych facility instead of going home to a potentially harmful situation. Alissa was kind when talking to he patient, reminding her she has a son to look after, reminding her she has a husband that loves her, and reminding her that she deserves the help that exists right now. I’m not sure Alissa realizes it, but her extra care and compassion for this patient may have saved her life.
