Those small but powerful gestures made me feel cared for not just as a patient, but as a person.
I am honored to nominate Alicia for the DAISY Award for the extraordinary care she provided to me in the recovery room after my exploratory laparotomy surgery. In one of the most vulnerable times of my life, she demonstrated exceptional skill, professionalism, and compassion that went far beyond my expectations of nursing care.
From the moment I opened my eyes, Alicia’s presence brought me comfort and reassurance. She anticipated my needs, managed my pain with attentiveness, and monitored me with the utmost focus and expertise. Yet what made the greatest difference was how she paired her clinical excellence with genuine kindness.
Alicia took the time to explain each step of my care, easing my anxiety and making me feel safe and informed. She never rushed, and her patience made me feel as though I was her only patient, even though I knew she had many responsibilities. She treated me with dignity and compassion, offering words of encouragement when I was afraid and even holding my hand when I needed comfort. Those small but powerful gestures made me feel cared for not just as a patient, but as a person.
Alicia embodies everything the DAISY Award represents. She transformed what could have been a frightening and overwhelming recovery into an experience of hope, reassurance, and dignity. She will always stand out in my memory as the nurse who not only cared for my body, but also for my spirit. I am deeply grateful for her and believe she is truly deserving of this recognition.
