Alice Gumiran, RN
When my mother was diagnosed with cancer and began chemotherapy, our lives changed in ways that are difficult to put into words. We are still on this journey, with many treatments ahead of us, and while the road is long, there has been one constant source of comfort through it all: our nurse, Alice.
I am nominating Alice because she represents everything a nurse should be. She doesn’t simply provide treatment. She provides hope, dignity, compassion, and humanity when patients and their families need it most.
Every chemotherapy session brings its own emotions. There is fear, uncertainty, exhaustion, and the quiet hope that this treatment is one step closer to healing. Alice has an incredible ability to make those difficult days feel lighter. The moment she walks into the room, she brings a sense of calm that cannot be taught. She makes my mother feel safe, respected, and genuinely cared for.
What has touched me most is that Alice never sees my mother as just another patient. She sees her as a person. She remembers the little things, notices when something feels different, asks how she is really doing, and always takes the time to listen. Even on what must be incredibly busy days, she never makes us feel rushed.
One of the hardest moments of this journey was when my mother decided to shave her head because of the effects of chemotherapy. It was an emotional milestone for all of us. Throughout it all, Alice treated her with such kindness and respect that she helped preserve my mother’s confidence and dignity during one of the most vulnerable times in her life.
As a daughter, watching someone you love go through cancer is heartbreaking. You try to stay strong, but there are moments when the weight of it all feels overwhelming. Alice has shown kindness not only to my mother but to our entire family. Sometimes it is through a reassuring conversation, sometimes through explaining a treatment with patience, and sometimes through a simple smile that reminds us we are not facing this alone.
Her clinical knowledge and professionalism are exceptional, but what truly makes Alice extraordinary is her heart. She combines excellence in nursing with genuine empathy. She understands that healing is not only about medication and procedures. It is about making people feel seen, heard, and cared for.
We still have a long road ahead, but knowing Alice is there for my mother gives our family comfort and confidence every single treatment day. She has become such an important part of this journey, and I honestly cannot imagine going through it without her.
People often say that nurses are the heart of healthcare. Alice is living proof of that. She is making one of the hardest experiences of our lives more bearable through her compassion, her dedication, and her unwavering commitment to every patient she cares for.
It is with immense gratitude and complete confidence that I nominate Alice for this award. She deserves to be recognized not only for the outstanding nurse she is, but for the extraordinary human being she is. She is making a lasting difference in my mother’s life and in the lives of families like ours every single day.
