My coworker, Aleya, is a DAISY Nurse for the phenomenal care and compassion she provided to a 13-year-old patient in our emergency department. This young patient had been stuck in the ED for over a week, as no pediatric mental health facilities would accept her. She was placed in an adult ER room with no windows, no peers her age, and very limited stimulation. Understandably, the patient was frustrated and expressed this through physical and verbal aggression toward staff during her first few days with us.

While many would have seen only the challenges, Aleya saw the child behind the behavior. She showed patience, empathy, and unwavering kindness. Aleya spent extensive time getting to know the patient and worked with her to develop coping mechanisms to use when upset or after difficult conversations with her mother. She went out of her way to bring the patient board games, card games, and arts and crafts projects to help occupy her time in a positive way.

Even on days when Aleya was not assigned as the patient’s primary nurse, she made a point to check in, sit with her, and talk with her throughout her shifts. It was remarkable to see the transformation in this patient. What began as hostility and mistrust slowly turned into calmness and compliance with care- and I truly believe that Aleya’s empathy and consistency made the difference. The patient showed Aleya deep respect and gratitude, which was evident to everyone on our team.

This is just one example of the many times I have witnessed Aleya’s compassion shine through in her nursing practice. She embodies the true spirit of nursing by meeting patients where they are, recognizing their humanity, and helping them feel seen, heard, and cared for in even the most difficult circumstances. Aleya’s dedication, heart, and commitment to her patients are what make her so deserving of the DAISY Award.

Aleya provided exceptional care to a pediatric mental health patient that was boarding in our emergency department for an extended period of time. During the patient's stay, Aleya consistently demonstrated compassion, patience and a true commitment to the well being of her patient. Even on her days off, Aleya dropped off art supplies and activities to help make the patient feel comfortable. Her willingness to go above and beyond the expectations of her role, reflects the kindness, dedication she provides to all of her patients. We truly believe she made a profound difference in the care of this patient. She embodies the true spirit of the DAISY Award.
