Alexis engages all patients, not because she is assigned or because she has extra time, but simply because her heart guides her to care.
Alexis Rivera, LPN, reminds me of why we choose nursing as a profession. I speak for my entire nightshift team this evening in celebrating her grace and display of care to restore dignity to a patient in need. As I am writing this, I know Alexis would stop me. I know Alexis never wants recognition for the beauty of her work, and I know Alexis cares not for accolades. Alexis simply cares for helping people in need. Alexis responded to a call light to assist another nurse's patient, as she always does. The patient wanted fresh water, which she fulfilled, and in typical “Alexis fashion”, she asked if there was anything else she could do to assist the patient before she left the room. This patient has been hospitalized due to a fall resulting in pelvic fractures, so mobility is a predominant issue. The patient explained that due to the nature of his visit, he was not able to wash his feet and this was sort of embarrassing for him. Alexis quietly closed the door and washed his feet with warm water and soap. Yes, this is basic human care and basic humanity, but Alexis does this non-stop, every hour of every shift, for anyone in need. The thing about Alexis is that had this assigned nurse not walked in on this during her rounding, no one would ever know. That’s Alexis, “God light my path”. I compare witnessing her work to witnessing a shooting star. It is of luck to see such a brilliant light even though there are so many, but nothing shines brighter in the moment you see it. Alexis engages all patients, not because she is assigned or because she has extra time, but simply because her heart guides her to care. I am simply blinded by how she guides our team by restoring our faith in our mission - to care for people. I honestly doubt she wants this written or even mentioned by us as a consensus. I sought approval from our team members, and we all agreed that this is what nursing is about. From us to you, thank you for lifting us.
