Even though I knew she had more patients, she made us feel like we were her only ones and never missed a beat!
My family has spent a week in the hospital so far while my lovely father, who is battling lung issues, cancer, and a stubborn MRSA infection now. It has been a dark, uncertain time, and every day seemed to bring more questions than answers, and the stress wore on all of us. There was one nurse, though, who made all the difference. Her name was Alexis. She wasn’t just there to check vitals or hand out medications—she saw us.

Every morning, she’d come in with a gentle smile and take the time to explain what was happening, even when the news wasn’t good. She never rushed things and was so patient with our father! Even though I knew she had more patients, she made us feel like we were her only ones and never missed a beat!

Alexis noticed when he was in pain before any of us did. She advocated for better pain management and made sure the doctors addressed it. She let Dad rest as long as she could and helped bathe him. She taught us how to care for Dad while we visited or stayed. She managed to get him the best care, but she also knew when to just sit quietly and let us cry or vent when she came into the room. She didn’t just push us to the side and walk away after doing the things my dad required.

More than once, she brought us things to help Dad or tucked an extra blanket and pillow around our dad when he needed that extra support and comfort. The medical expertise mattered, and she was knowledgeable, no doubt, but what really stayed with us was her kindness and the small gestures, the understanding, the way she never treated us like just another room on her list.

I still remember how she made an unbearable experience just a little bit lighter and hoped she would remain our nurse the whole course of this hospital stay we are still enduring, but she just didn’t leave us; she introduced new nurses and made the transitions so much easier!
