First of all, please allow me to extend my deepest gratitude to the entire staff within the TCH network, from reception to the physicians; every single person contributed to a compassionate and supportive environment during what was an incredibly trying time for our family. Our 28-month-old son, Theo, was admitted on a moment's notice after an MRI revealed a mass in his cranium. Following a successful procedure to address his hydrocephalus diagnosis, Theo experienced some post-surgical complications that took a toll on him and on us, his parents. I imagine that when Alexis Conley clocked in for her shift that day, she had no idea that she would be the answer to a prayer we didn't even know how to voice.
From the moment Theo arrived in the NICU and was surrounded by nearly a dozen medical professionals, Alexis immediately stood out. She seamlessly executed orders from the charge nurse while simultaneously processing new information to anticipate future needs. This combination of clinical skill and cognitive agility is exactly what anxious, exhausted parents like us need to witness. But what truly sets Alexis apart and what inspires this nomination is her gift for transforming from a highly competent nurse into a source of emotional support and advocacy. She quickly became a familiar and comforting presence for Theo, who is not always the most welcoming of strangers, and a steady source of clear, practical information for us. There must be a delicate balance that RNs must strike between professionalism and compassion, and while I may not be an expert in bedside manner, I can say with certainty that Alexis navigates that balance with exceptional grace. She operates seamlessly above, below, and through that invisible line, providing both care and comfort in ways that words barely capture. After a touch-and-go 24 hours, Theo began to respond well to treatment and showed clear signs of improvement. He even began thanking Alexis each time she checked his vitals or drew blood. He would get visibly frustrated when the blinds were closed and he couldn't see her at her desk. I could go on and on about how wonderful Alexis is, and I have no doubt that many other families have benefited and will continue to benefit from her presence and care. I would be happy to speak further about her performance if given the opportunity. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Alexis played a vital role in helping us feel whole again.
