Alexa is a nurse on the Medical F3 unit. As such, she routinely cares for medically complex children and their families. I recently had the opportunity to observe her in action and witnessed her go above and beyond to support a recent admit and their mother. In this situation, Alexa was able to set an anxious parent at ease through expertly explaining the care, diagnostics, and interventions that were occurring. Not only that, but Alexa identified that the biggest barrier this mother was experiencing was exhaustion, and so took extra time to hold the baby, allowing their mother to rest and recuperate. She also supported this family through difficult conversations with providers when it was decided that the patient would require NG tube feeds instead of eating by mouth.

Alexa is a fantastic preceptor. Her contagious, positive energy just radiates, and her orientees and students have the best experiences. She goes the extra mile in this area, often requesting nursing students be paired with her and utilizing the teaching kits and practice dolls on the unit.

Alexa is a member of the Clinical Quality Council on the unit. On this council, she helps support safe patient handling in particular. By doing so, she is able to be knowledgeable on the different patient movement devices and is a resource to her peers on the floor.
