Because Alex acted so quickly, my father-in-law received critical intervention that helped protect his brain and gave him a better chance to fight the virus without lasting harm.
During my father-in-law’s stay on the 8th floor of the Med-Surg unit, we were blessed to have Alex Martinez as his nurse. Alex is not only compassionate and attentive, but his quick thinking and clinical awareness made all the difference in what could have been a devastating situation.
On the morning Alex took over my father-in-law’s care, he immediately noticed that something wasn’t right. As my father-in-law was being transported for a HIDA scan, Alex recognized signs that he was deteriorating neurologically. Without hesitation, Alex urgently checked his vitals and called the rapid response team. His timeliness and decisive action were instrumental in getting my father-in-law the immediate care he needed as the neuroinvasive West Nile Virus began to take over. Because Alex acted so quickly, my father-in-law received critical intervention that helped protect his brain and gave him a better chance to fight the virus without lasting harm.
Beyond his clinical skill, Alex also treated us, the family, with incredible kindness and empathy. He took time to explain what was happening and reassured us in the midst of fear and uncertainty. He made us feel like we were not just observers but part of the care team for our loved one.
Alex truly went above and beyond, embodying both the skill and the heart of nursing. He cared for our family as if we were his own, and for that, we will always be deeply grateful. He is the very definition of a DAISY nurse.
