The outpatient PET scan team reached out to the PED for assistance with accessing a port. This patient was a new diagnosis, and mom was anxious. She did not have a good understanding or education of the process and did not make an appointment with the infusion center to have the patient's port accessed prior to the PET scan. The South outpatient infusion was unable to assist as there was no appt scheduled and stated that they do not do pediatrics.

Alana was working a partial shift in the pediatric ED and was comfortable with accessing ports, so she offered to assist. It was not a clear-cut situation with quite a bit of confusion and ADON involvement. Alana ended up staying 2 hours past her shift to confirm this patient got what they needed and everything was completed by the books and documented.

She assisted with collaborating with the PET scan, Nemours, and the mother to coordinate patient needs. She was able to access the port successfully, have the patient complete the scan, and completed the patient's labs the same day so that they would not have to leave accessed or come back tomorrow for the labs to be drawn.

It sounds much simpler than it played out. The outpatient team was unaware of protocols or who to contact. Alana found who was on call and who needed to be aware with the Nemours team and south leadership, she confirmed where she should document, and coordinated with PED pharmacy for appropriate heparin dosing.

This is one of many instances in which Alana has gone above and beyond for a patient who was not even "her patient" or a patient of her department. She is a consistent patient advocate and always prioritizes patient needs. She utilizes every resource she has to do so and always does her best to follow guidelines and protocols in the process for patient safety.
