We had a young patient who quickly approached the end of life. She had a sudden illness and received very unfortunate news. As the night charge nurse, Alaina Good Thurmond went above and beyond. The patient’s birthday happened during the patient’s stay, so Alaina door dashed a large set of balloons that spelled “Happy Birthday” and streamers to decorate the patient’s room. Alaina and the primary nurse, Tamra, along with other nurses, went into her room to celebrate and sing Happy Birthday. On the day shift, the family was faced with a very difficult conversation related to comfort care and the future of hospice. Despite this hard conversation, the only thing they spoke about was how wonderful it was to have Alaina decorate her room. The family was pleasantly surprised and grateful! It made their day even in a difficult time. Alaina’s compassionate care is above and beyond, and she continuously exceeds expectations. She is a wonderful nurse. Her patients are consistently taken care of and rave about her kindness. She deserves 500 DAISY awards if it were possible.
