Aidan was instrumental in the flow of the evening and taking exceptional care of this patient. He overcame the stress of the scene
There was a patient on 2 South who had been admitted for a COPD exacerbation as well as several other comorbidities. He had been a semi-frequent patient at Lankenau for similar diagnoses. This man had a long history of PTSD and was a veteran, as well as other psychosocial hardships that made caring for him extremely difficult at times. He was confused and intermittently combative. He was nearing the end of life this past admission, with only a single family member in another country as a contact. He had several calls to his room overnight, and the team was between a rock and a hard place. He had made himself a DNR/DNI while more coherent, and there were no further options available for him. He had progressed to a point where he could not make his own decisions. Aidan McMahon was the charge nurse on 2 South the night these events occurred. Aidan was in the room almost as frequently as the patient's primary nurse to ensure the safety of both the patient and the staff. The patient was intermittently agitated and could become combative. Aidan maintained a soft approach and handled the patient well, which helped calm the patient and the team. As a charge nurse, he made it a point to be more than just peripherally involved in an escalating situation. Aidan was instrumental in the flow of the evening and taking exceptional care of this patient. He overcame the stress of the scene and ensured the patient's humanity was as primary a concern as his medical condition. The patient's contact eventually settled on comfort care, and the patient passed without pain and with dignity later that day.
